It could be that you need more than the job that you have to cover your costs and pay the bills. You may have a degree but it isn’t helping you get the career that you want. You may be a stay-at-home-parent that is getting ready to re-enter the workforce, or are a mid-level management employee that dreads going to work every day. If any of these sounds like you, then it could be a good idea to train to do something new. When you are working in a career that you love then it can make a huge difference to you, and can also be such a financial benefit too. But how do you go about retraining or getting into a completely new industry? Here are some of the ways that you can do just that.
Choose Your Target Role
If you aren’t happy with that you are currently doing, or what has been happening in the past, then you must have a rough idea of what you would like to be doing. If you still aren’t sure, then have a look at what some of the best paid jobs are. Some may require a college degree or further training; some may not. Then you can make a plan to get to your goal. You simply have to know what the end goal is first, though.
There are many ways to educate yourself when it comes to changing career. It could be something specific that you can do before making the switch, like an online nurse leadership degree, for example. It could also be something more generic like a first aid course or a computer skills course. You should also educate yourself on the industry that you want to go into as well. Read the news, keep up to with relevant blogs or magazines that are industry specific. Then you will have a greater knowledge of it, and it will help you to stand out at interview.
Stick With Current Employer
You might work for a great company, but you just hate the job that you are doing. If you are good at what you do, though, the chances are that the company would rather keep you than have you leave. So talk to them about the chance to re-train with them. Could they help with training in a different sector perhaps? As part of your development plan they should be keen to help you do this.
Temping is going to be for everyone, simply because the hours can be unknown and change over time. But temping can be a way to earn money while you are training or doing an online course, for example. When you sign up with a few recruitment agencies, you could talk to them about the kind of work that you want to be doing, and then it will give you a little taster to see if you like it or not. It can be a good way to get involved with a new industry, especially if you don’t know much about it.
