The Lemonade Stand – Book Review and iPad Mini Giveaway

Happy Monday! I was really happy to be given the opportunity recently to review The Lemonade Stand, a new book by my friend Shannon over at The Heavy Purse.

As a parent, I’m always trying to make sure that my little girl won’t make the same mistakes that I did with money. I often look to Shannon for advice via her blog about money lessons for kids and I’m never disappointed.

Needless to say, I found her book to be an excellent learning resource as well as being fun to read and fun to look at with its colourful design and interesting characters.

What is The Lemonade Stand about?

The Lemonade Stand tells the story of four children who learn a very practical lesson about saving, spending and sharing their money. The book starts off with a couple of the children falling in love with a special toy and wanting their Mom to buy it for them.

The other two children try to teach them what they have already learned about why it’s good to save money for something greater a little bit further down the line.

All four children put their learning into practice by making money ‘right now’ and decide to open a lemonade stand where they sell cups of ice-cold lemonade to their neighbours and friends. They do make money and they get to keep their profit after paying back their parents for the cost of the lemonade ingredients!

They share out the profit between them and each child decides how they are going to save, spend and share their money.

Who is the book for?

This book is aimed at children probably over the age of 5 (although I have already read this to my daughter who is 3 years old) and is a useful resource for parents and teachers who want to help the children in their care learn valuable lessons about money. How to save, spend and share money to be precise!

What are the key takeaways from this book?

This book importantly delivers the message about giving as well as saving and spending. I personally think this is something that any child could benefit from – teaching children this kind of money lesson will instil the right values and beliefs around money from an early age.

There are also some great maths lessons in this book with language such as ‘profit’ and ‘costs’ as well as the task of dividing the proceeds among the children!
