“Mummy, please can I have a drink?” I stop what I’m doing and head into the kitchen to make my little girl (G) a drink. Then I head back to my desk and continue tapping away at the keys on my laptop.
“Mummy, I’m hungry…” I look up from the article I’m writing to see G’s innocent little face and I know that she needs me. She may as well be saying, “Mummy? When will you stop working and spend time with me?”
She’s not hungry really, just bored. The school holidays have only just begun and we have five more weeks left! G is home everyday now and just needs some quality time with me. I stop what I’m doing and we go to the park for a while.
G has a lot of fun on the swings and slide and I try not to think about the freelance work that I need to finish today and how I’ll have to do this when she’s in bed. G’s bedtime has been getting later because she’s at the age where she thinks staying up is exciting and going to bed is about as fun as watching paint dry. “If I go to sleep now, I’ll have to wait ages until morning!”
The hubby went away on Tuesday, so it’s just me and G until Sunday night when he returns. I need to keep her busy and entertained and at the same time deliver on my freelance projects and keep up with my blog. I think of my blog as a business because it’s starting to make a little money for me these days (although not as much as last month), but something’s got to give.
It can’t be G because she’s the most important part of my life and basically the reason why I do what I do. She’s the reason why I want my debt cleared asap and why I work like a Trojan from home to try to do my bit to support my family financially. It can’t be my freelance projects because my clients are relying on me and by being efficient and reliable I might just get more work from them in the future.
So that leaves my blog. You may have noticed that I didn’t post on Monday and that’s just because I couldn’t find the time. I haven’t been able to read as many blogs as I’d like this week or do as much commenting and therefore my Friday’s Fab Links post has had to take a backseat too. I did post on Wednesday though with my Breaking Bad Habits – How to Stop Overspending post!
At times like this, I wish I could outsource some of my weekly tasks but this month hasn’t been great for income and hey I’m still in debt after all! Outsourcing isn’t an option at the moment which is a shame because I feel like this blog needs someone else behind the keyboard as well as me to ramp things up a bit. Ideally I’d like to be posting every day but that’s not achievable right now.
Life happens and priorities get reshuffled. That’s just life! Whilst G is home everyday for the holidays, I’m going to be with her. That’s why I work from home, so I can do just that. In the evenings and on weekends I’ll work on my other projects and my blog. I may not be posting three times per week over the next month or so, it might be two (or even once a week) instead.
I hope I will be able to post more often but I’ll just have to see how things go! As it happens, I’m actually going to be posting tomorrow because I’m co-hosting Financially Savvy Saturdays again. So check back then!
I hope you’ll bear with me during the next few weeks! 🙂

It happens Hayley! Take the time you need with your little girl, it’s important! Trust me, my mom didn’t and I’m still sometimes bitter about it.

My kids are small and when they ask me to play with them or spend time with them, it’s next to impossible to say no. Cherish the time while it lasts!

It’s tough balancing every thing, especially when they are small. I’d say it gets easier when they get bigger but they need a different type of attention!
It may not sound the greatest of ideas when you are so busy but hear me out. Actually taking a break may be best for both you and your daughter. It can give you a chance to relax a little, enjoy life and reduce burn out. Yes the work will still be there, but coming back to it refreshed may give you more productivity and a thirst to know what you are trying to achieve
It’ll be worth it in the end though.

I think that’s the catch 22 when your blog starts to pick up steam and it leads to other paid opportunities…our own blog might have a tendency to get neglected. It happens to all of us, so breathe and come back to your normal routine when you are ready!

You’re right that sometimes, we just can’t make time for everything, and it’s good that you’ve prioritized things. I’ve been busy with freelance writing and my blog has similarly taken a backseat. I think it happens to a lot of us. The only thing I can say is put a call out for guest posts (maybe on a specific theme), or if you find a rare time where G is sleeping and your freelance work is slow, try to write a bunch of posts to queue up. Enjoy your time with G while she’s home! No one is going to fault you for that =).

I can so relate. When my daughter is around while I’m trying to work, I feel so guilty. If she asks me to stop and play, it’s very difficult to say no. She is always my number 1 priority!

Don’t sweat it, Hayley. Enjoy the time with your daughter and it’s okay if your blog has to take a backseat for a few weeks. We’ll still all be here. 🙂

My daughter is seven year old and she always hugs and kiss me. When she saw me frowning in front of my laptop, she always put a smile on my lips literally. 🙂

Take some time off and spend it with your family! I totally understand that. Sometimes there is more stuff to do than there is time.

Totally understand, Hayley. Family first. We’ll still be here. Look at me, only getting here a week later, and I don’t even have a little girl to look after, though I did spend quite a bit of time with my grandson “Monkey Butt”, I call him.
