9/11 Flight Crew Memorial
Devoted to the professionals who crewed the 2 American Airlines flights and 2 United Airlines flights, the bronze statue that sits in the middle of the memorial has 2 pilots, 2 flight attendants, and one child (who represent the traveling public). The names of the 33 crew members are engraved on the base. The memorial also contains a piece of steel bar that was from one of the World Trade Center towers and a stone from the crash site at Shanks Ville, PA, and the Pentagon.
The most interesting thing about the memorial for children is learning and understanding the true meaning of the sculpture. They can enjoy reading about all the details, such as the flight attendant placing the blanket around the shoulders of the child, representing a promise to passenger care and service. Also, the crew is situated all facing a different direction, North, South, East, and West – representing a compass rose.
