Agreed! Letting my friends know my priority in life and my situation has helped me and is very beneficial to me as we can still hang out in cheaper ways like eating and staying at someone’s house.

I like the honest approach. If they are true friends they will understand. You could host a gathering at your place? This way you still get to see friend but can control the cost.

Great suggestions! We have kids, so most things that our family is invited to are fairly frugal. Occasionally we get invited to pricier things, but most of our friends know about our #yearofno, so they don’t get offended when we turn those invitations down.

Initiating outings is a great idea – it really puts the ball in your court financially. Suggesting a picnic lunch at the park can be just as fun as at a fancy restaurant for a fraction of the cost. Or scrounging up a free fun event like a city sponsored outdoor movie is terrific.

Great approach to saving money and saving friends! I think initiating the outings is a great way to make your friends feel wanted as well as control the cost.

I like the idea of being open and honest. True friends will understand your situation, accept your choices and find ways to work around it . 🙂
I particularly love the ‘initiate outings’ tip. This will serve you well! You will still be the fun one but have your spending under control.

Definitely be honest with friends. We have a couple friend that we would go out to dinner with a couple times a month. Finally one of us (I can’t remember who) said that things were a little lean and suggested cooking at home. What a relief! Since then we’ve alternated houses on Sundays and have our own “family dinners” making sure to bring a side or bottle of wine when it isn’t our turn to cook. It’s saved us a lot of money but even better we get to spend more time with our friends.
