Of all the emotions that go with paying off debt, hope is the one I struggle with the most on a daily basis. Thank goodness for this wonderful, supportive PF community for keeping my hope burning bright everyday. π

Too right GMD! I struggled with hope about our debts before I started this blog and before I started reading other people’s stories! π
I LOVE that quote from Shawshank!! It is true, hope is what will set you free from any struggle in your life. I have always been a “glass is half full” person and staying hopeful is certainly what has gotten me out of some painful situations.

It is a great quote isn’t it! Debt can really drag a person down – it certainly did me for a very long time. Having hope is important to help us turn things around!
I love it when people address the emotional side of being in debt. There is just not enough information out there about this. A lot of people are in debt because issues like losing the breadwinner, or racking up a heap of student loans, but most of us are in debt because of the way we think. When you realize that you are in debt because of your mentality, it does bring a wave of emotions you are discussing on your blog. I will be following your series. Thank you for sharing.

I’m really pleased that you’re enjoying this series Petrish! That means a lot to me. I was in debt for many years prior to now because of my own mentality around money. At the time though, I didn’t realise it and blamed the banks for lending me more than I needed. I thought it was normal for everyone to have some debt and then it got to the point where our debts got totally out of control…!
I love all the quotes you’ve been including. The Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies. I do think that having hope improves your chances of being successful with anything. A good outlook on life is essential to being happy. When you’re in a glass half empty mood, you don’t see the possible opportunities in front of you, and you don’t have motivation.

Thanks E.M! I think a positive outlook on life is really important. I know lots of people who feel bitter about the hand that life dealt them but instead of moving forwards, they keep looking back and this hinders their chances of future happiness!
I love your discussion about dreams! It’s such a struggle to get out of debt, that one must dream of what is to come after the debt in order to stay motivated.
I literally just paid off a $9,500 credit card debt this morning after selling my car. I’ve never felt better!
I’m officially debt free (apart from my mortgages).

Wow, that’s some credit card payment Mr Ikonz! I can imagine how great that must have felt. Mortgage debt is good debt as at least you have something to show for it!
This is fantastic. Hope is the hardest emotion for me as well, but one that keeps me going. Hope that I can still reach my goals, even if they are later than expected. Hope that I can do this, all on my own. I have had my fair share of disappointments, and there will be more, but you weather the storm better each time.

I love the Shawshank Redemption! Great movie and a great quote. I do have a dream, I guess that why we all decide to start tackling out debts and not live in denial anymore. I hope to share this dream soon. I think sharing my dreams with others will help keep my on track and accountable on this journey.

Wonderful read as always!! Hope is such a critical part of the debt repayment process and it’s a much more actionable emotion than people generally give credit for. Thanks for the added motivation π

Hey Hayley and thanks for another great post π
Hope + Optimism + Action = Dreams!!
For me, those three concepts can allow anyone to realize practically anything they want to do or be in life. Obviously, there is a little more to it at times, but without those three concepts guiding you, life becomes a lot harder to deal with!
Take Hayley and my best to all.

Hi Lyle and thank you! I like your formula for achieving your dreams! All three concepts together are definitely a recipe for success! π
Hope has kept us going for 44 months of debt repayment. With 9 months to go before being debt free it still fuels us. Can’t wait to be on the other side! π
