If there’s one thing I want this blog to achieve eventually (other than spurring us on to become debt free of course), it’s the hope that it will be a source of information for other people who are in debt and that will it inspire them to want to get out of debt too.
Even if I can just help one person face up to their debt and see the light at the end of the tunnel, it would really make me feel like I’ve done something positive with this whole ‘been in debt since I can remember’ experience.
So when I was approached recently by Chris Bibey, founder of Finance.info about doing an interview on how we’re finally taking steps to get out of debt, I was only too happy to oblige!
Finance.info is a finance blog with a difference in that most of the articles published are first hand advice and tips from professionals in a particular field.
Chris asked me three questions:
- Do you find it helpful to track your progress associated with paying down debt?
- What would you tell somebody who is swimming in debt and scared to take the first step towards making things better?
- What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far regarding eliminating your debt?
Although I’m not yet an expert at getting out of debt, I do have first hand experience of swimming in it and the challenges that come with it. 🙂 To read my answers, check out the whole interview here: Do you Hope to be Debt Free One Day?
Doing this interview with Chris has helped me to reflect on our progress and the challenges so far. There are lots of challenges I’ve come across already with paying off debt – staying positive is the main one for me but another one is constantly striving to earn more and save more money to overpay the debts.
Because I work full time and the hubby works away often at weekends and some evenings, I can’t commit to a regular part time job on the side because of having to pay for childcare for my daughter. It’s so expensive, it just wouldn’t be worth it. Plus I want to be able to be there and put her to bed myself and read her a story!
So I’ve tried all the usual income streams from home – Ebay; surveys; competitions; odd jobs here and there – all with varying results and unfortunately none of these are regular enough to really make much of an impact.
To take the ‘striving’ factor out of earning and saving more cash, I need to tap into a regular source of extra income that I can work on from home when my little girl is tucked up in bed. (I am working towards making my blog profitable but this is a long, long, long way off!)
I wondered: are you trying to make extra money on the side working from home? What have you tried and what’s been successful for you?

Freelance writing a good way to go…I’ve pitched solo articles before, which might be easier than trying to get a staff position at first. There’s tons of websites and boards that list sites that pay. Also, mystery shopping is a good way to earn cash while you’re out running errands anyways. Just have to make sure the shops you’re going on allow kids.

Great advice thank you! I love the freelance writing idea, will definitely check that out 🙂
